Definition:

A Vacuum Truck, also known as a vac truck or suction truck, is a type of tank truck that has a pump and a tank, designed to pneumatically suck liquids, sludges, slurries or sand. The diverse clientele base for this type of vehicle ranges from municipal bodies and environmental agencies to construction companies and large-scale industrial businesses. Industry experts value vacuum trucks for their ability to perform specialized cleaning tasks and waste disposal functions that other vehicles can't handle.

These trucks are used to pump out septic tanks, catch basins, and containment pits, where they remove waste material and then transport it to a treatment or disposal site. They're also commonly used for street cleanup, sewer maintenance, and in construction and industrial settings to remove waste from the site.

Key components of a Vacuum Truck include:

Chassis: This is the framework of the truck which includes the engine, transmission, and wheels. Vacuum trucks come in various sizes, from light-duty models to heavy-duty designs for more intensive tasks.

Cab: This is where the driver operates the truck, with controls for driving as well as for operating the vacuum system.

Vacuum System: This is comprised of a high-capacity pump, hoses, and a tank. The pump creates a vacuum in the tank, drawing in air or material through the hoses. The vacuum can then be released to discharge the collected material at a designated disposal site.

Tank: The tank is where the collected material is stored for transportation. Tanks vary in size and material, depending on the type of waste the truck is designed to handle.

Hoses and Nozzles: These are used to suck up the waste material. The size, length, and type of hose and nozzle can vary depending on the specific job requirements.

Rear Door: This allows access to the interior of the tank for cleaning and maintenance. The rear door is usually secured with a mechanical latch system.

Small Vacuum Trucks (Septic Service): These typically weigh up to 7,500 kg, have a length of up to 6 meters, a suction capacity of up to 1,000 litres per minute, and are designed for smooth terrain. They’re used for small-scale tasks like residential septic service.

Medium Vacuum Trucks (Industrial Cleaning): These trucks usually weigh between 7,500 to 18,000 kg, have a length between 6 to 7 meters, a suction capacity between 1,000 to 2,000 litres per minute, and can handle smooth to semi-rough terrain. They’re often used for industrial cleaning tasks.

Large Vacuum Trucks (Hydro Excavation): These have a weight ranging from 18,000 to 32,000 kg, a length of 7 to 8 meters, a suction capacity between 2,000 to 3,000 liters per minute and can navigate both smooth and rough terrains. They’re used for larger tasks such as hydro excavation.

Heavy-Duty Vacuum Trucks (Oil and Gas): These typically weigh between 32,000 to 50,000 kg, have a length between 8 to 9 meters, a suction capacity between 3,000 to 4,000 liters per minute, and are capable of handling varied terrains. They’re designed for heavy-duty tasks in the oil and gas industry.

Super-Duty Vacuum Trucks (Hazardous Material): These are the largest vacuum trucks, often weighing over 50,000 kg, with a length exceeding 9 meters, a suction capacity exceeding 4,000 liters per minute, and can handle both smooth and rough terrains. They are used for intensive tasks in challenging conditions, often for handling hazardous materials.

Health and Safety Considerations for Telescopic Handlers

Operator Training: Only trained and certified personnel should operate a Vacuum Truck. The training should include the mechanical aspects of the truck, safety procedures, risk assessment, and emergency response.

Pre-Use Inspection: Before operation, a thorough inspection of the vehicle should be carried out to ensure that it is in good working condition. This includes inspecting the hoses, tank, and vacuum system for any damages.

Load Limits: Overloading the tank beyond its stated capacity can lead to instability or damage to the vacuum system. Always adhere strictly to the load capacity specified by the manufacturer.

Regular Maintenance: Regular checks and maintenance should be performed on the Vacuum Truck to ensure safe operation and prevent mechanical failure.
